Big guns advance in Champions League

English Premier League contenders Arsenal took top honours in Group A of the UEFA Champions League yesterday with a comfortable 4-1 win over Swiss team FC Basel.

Lucas Perez hit a hat-trick for Arsenal.

Arsenal topped the group over French powerhouse Paris Saint-Germain who could only draw 2-2 with Ludogorets.

Barcelona won Group C, after a 4-0 blanking of Borussia Monchengladbach to finish on 15 points.

Turkey international Arda Turan scored three goals, while talisman Lionel Messi provided the opener.

Manchester City eked out a 1-1 draw with Celtic, giving them nine points and second place.

In Group B, Italian contenders Napoli and Portugal's Benfica took the top two spots.

Atletico Madrid topped Group D with 15 points, despite losing 1-0 away to German champions Bayern Munich.

Munich ended with 12 points, also guaranteeing them a place in the knockout round.

In today's Champions League matchups, the most eye-catching is in Group H as Sevilla, on 11 points and in second place, play Lyon, who are on seven points in third.

Italian champions Juventus lead the group on 11 points and are assured of a place in the knockout phase.

In Group G, English champions Leicester are already assured of top honours, but FC Porto and FC Copenhagen vie for second.

In Group E, AS Monaco and Bayer Leverkusen will advance as group winner and runner-up, respectively.

In Group F, Borussia Dortmund lead Real Madrid by two points; the teams play in Madrid to decide the group winner.
