SEEKING MY DREAM (centre, No. 5), ridden by jockey Omar Walker, sprints clear of rivals to win the Supreme Ventures Diamond Mile at Caymanas Park last year.

Supreme Ventures Limited (SVL), one of the main sponsors of the Diamond Mile set for Caymanas Park this weekend, is promising an event with more than just a touch of class.

Seventeen of the island's best thoroughbreds have been nominated for the big race, ensuring that the event will be of the highest quality.

The activities off the track are expected to match if not exceed what will be a spectacular race.

Having bought into the vision of Gary Peart, chairman of the Betting, Gaming and Lotteries Commission, SVL is planning to make this year's second staging even better.

"Last year when they started, it we got involved because we saw the vision that Gary Peart had, to introduce this event, of which there is no other like it in the Caribbean, and it was such a huge success," said Simone Clarke-Cooper, SVL's assistant vice-president, group corporate communications.

Richest purse

"From the time it happened people have been buzzing about it. We are planning to step it up this year."

The Diamond Mile, with the richest purse in the Caribbean, is already a cut above.

"We have a huge set-up that we are putting on, on the in-field. We want all the patrons to come out dressed to the nines to have a day that not only horse racing that fans will enjoy, but to have something different that socialites will enjoy. If you want to see something different, something exciting happening at the track, there will be 16 different races, including the feature race which is the Supreme Ventures Diamond Mile with the $13.9-million purse."
