Battle for jockeys' title heats up

December 27, 2016

File Hot apprentice Bebeto Harvey.

The  two-way battle for this year’s champion jockey’s crown, between four-time  winner Omar Walker and hot apprentice Bebeto Harvey, is getting closer with each race day.
With two race meets left in 2016 Walker leads Harvey by just five winners, 67 to 62. Fifteen race days ago Walker appeared to be strolling to his fifth title. He had 54 winners while Harvey was well behind in fourth on 38 winners.  Aaron Chatrie (42) and Shane Elllis (40) were second and third respectively.
Now Harvey has blown past both Chatrie and Ellis and has Walker in his sights. The latter has come to a virtual walk over the past two months while Harvey has been piling on the winners.
The two top riders have six rides each on today’s  11-race Boxing Day card at Caymanas Park, the penultimate raceday of the year, and Harvey could make more inroads into Walker’s lead and set up a grandstand finish on Saturday, December 31.
Harvey’s top rides today are TWO STEPS UP in race two, TUXEDO in the fourth and LEEKOUT in the fifth. BOUNCE in the eighth can pull off an upset.
Walker rides the odds on favourite SHE’S A MANEATER in the 10th, the Jamaica Two-year-old stakes $4 million feature, race while he is also aboard highly fancied RAMBUNCTIOUS LINKS in the fourth race and IAN LINKS in the seventh.
