Atkinson appointed head coach at NY state university

February 22, 2017

Jamaican Olympian Janelle Atkinson has been hired as head of women's swimming and diving coach at the State University of New York (SUNY) Stony Brook.

Atkinson, who previously worked as assistant coach at the University of Connecticut, Fairfield, was announced on Monday.

Atkinson spent three seasons in Connecticut working with both the men's and women's swimming and diving programmes.

"I'm beyond thrilled and excited to be appointed to lead this programme," Atkinson said on the university's website yesterday.

"The high level of excellence this athletic department has achieved is certainly something I look forward to contributing to in the future."

Stony Brook's women's programme has been on competitive hiatus since the 2012-2013 season because of critical maintenance renovation to university pool.

Atkinson, who competed in the 200-metre and 400-metre freestyle at the 2000 Sydney and 2004 Athens Olympics, also spent four seasons at Wright State University coaching the distance programme, as well as directing the institution's fundraising swim lesson programme.

Most recently, Atkinson worked as an ESPN commentator at the 2016 Rio Olympics in Brazil.
