Punters taken to the cleaners
Form players were left running for cover at Caymanas Park yesterday as there was just one winning favourite, SILVER SLIPPER, at the very short odds of 1-4 in the day's fourth race.
The surprises on the nine-race programme began from as early as the second race with TRADITIONAL STORM winning at 5-1. The odds on the winners then got bigger and bigger, while there were big payouts for doubles, exactas and other exotic bets. Surprisingly, the biggest winning odds of the day was paid out on 17-1 shot MEET JUSTIN, ridden by former champion Dane Nelson. The exacta with 12-1 runner-up MONEYNEVERSLEEP returned a whopping $31,913.00.
Then, in the very next race, first-time runner MALACHI won at 9-1. The MEET JUSTIN, MALACHI double paid $16,096.00. The MALACHI, LADY ELI (3-1) exacta returned $6,328.00 and the 4-8-4 rolling triple $139,363.00.
With MARKOFAPRINCE taking the seventh race at 6-1, no punter was good enough to capture the popular Super-6 and the carry-over to Saturday is $1,231,020.37.
Nelson was at it again in the eighth event, winning aboard CONCLUSION at 8-1. That 4-9-8 rolling triple paid $134,560.00.
The knockout punch for punters came in the day's nighpan (ninth and final) with TURBO MACHINE (AndrÈ Powell's second winner) streaking home at 11-1, the 8-6 double was $9,863, the exacta, $8,292 (6-3) and trifecta, $12,975 (6-3-14). The carry-overs for the next race meet on Saturday: Super-6 - $1,176,464 and Pick-9 - $1,863,786. (Full results in The Gleaner).
