Female apprentice jockey Andree Powell is the sole female in the top 10 of riders at Caymanas Park this season with $2,645,825 in stakes so far.

Powell, 26, has ridden five winners from 47 mounts this year, including a double on GLYDER and the little-fancied CLASSY AVIATOR in sensational fashion on January 14.

She has also finished second five times and third six times since the start of the year.

Both Powell and fellow female apprentice Mellisa Ward graduated from the Jockeys' School in September 2015.

"Things did not come easily for me, or for that matter, any of my two female colleagues. But we weathered the storm and the future is a lot brighter now," said Powell in a February 11 interview published in Track & Pools.

Powell, a graduate of Clarendon College, had her first winner more than six months after her debut with 99-1 outsider SAMORA last April.

The leading rider remains Omar Walker, who has more than $ 6.7 million in earnings from 46 mounts and 14 wins this year.
