She's a Maneater brings the class
SHE'S A MANEATER packs the class and DON CHASSIS appears to have caught the pace, factors which should make them hard to beat in tomorrow's Thornbird and Prince Consort Stakes at 1400 metres.
Having tasted defeat only once in five starts, the first time she ventured past seven furlongs, outfinished by SOTOMAYOR in December's Jamaica Two-Year-Old Stakes, SHE'S A MANEATER is almost out-of-class, racing fillies at seven furlongs.
DON CHASIS has no such impressive resume against his peers in the Prince Consort Stakes. However, he has improved rapidly since debuting December 10, moving from four lengths second behind NIGHT LIGHT, to chasing and beating LOOSE CANNON, convincingly, in last month's Sir Howard Stakes.
The fillies-only Thornbird Stakes should prove that SHE'S A MANEATER is still the top girl in town, at least sprinting. She faces decent rivals, a handful of whom emerged much improved as three-year-olds this season, including Anthony Nunes' pair of RUN ALL DAY and BILINGUAL.
Another classy-looking filly, MARLENE MY LOVE, a half sister to the illustrious MARK MY WORD, was unraced as a two-year-old but has certainly impacted at three. She impressed at 1000 metres straight on debut and looked even better when putting away non-winners-of-two at a mile in 1:39.3.
However, none of the three have felt the pace and class of SHE'S A MANEATER, who was dragged in splits of 46.3 and 1:12.0 by lightning-fast MR UNIVERSE in the Jamaica Two-Year-Old Stakes while being kept wide down the backstretch by MONEY MAGNET.
Trainer Wayne DaCosta added blinkers on her return in January and she blew away older horses, clocking 1:25.4 for 1400 metres. However, he has decided to leave the equipment in his tack room after SHE'S A MANEATER blazed six furlongs in 1:124 at exercise, with no head gear, last Saturday morning.
Torrid opening splits are expected, especially with MONEY MAGNET breaking from post-position one with Philip Feanny's pair of KHALEESI's REVENGE and FORT KNOX also blessed with speed.
MARLENE MY LOVE and Nunes' pair, RUN ALL DAY and BILINGUAL, will have their day going longer. They won't catch SHE'S A MANEATER when Omar Walker unleashes the speedster.
Prince Consort Stakes
Meanwhile, DaCosta's FEARLESS SAMURAI could start favourite to land the Prince Consort Stakes, considering his 1:06.0 at 1100 metres, beating BUBBLING KITTEN on Ash Wednesday.
However, he had to be ridden from the gate to establish an early lead and was never going away from the field at any point, hence BUBBLING KITTEN finishing within two lengths.
BUBBLING KITTEN returned on Saturday and was unplaced at 1200 metres behind LOTTERY TICKET, never a threat throughout, which certainly doesn't bode well for FEARLESS SAMURAI, going a half-furlong longer in a tougher field.
Note how DaCosta has summoned an apprentice, Jerome Innis, to partner his lighter jhorse, RADICAL, who comes in at 50.0 kilos, 16lb lighter than FEARLESS SAMURAI and well suited to seven furlongs after winning in 1:26.3 at the distance on last.
DON CHASSIS, however, certainly caught the eye in the Sir Howard Stakes. He never relented when chasing LOOSE CANNON, taking charge past the furlong pole in 59.1, before pulling away to win in 1:12.3
Shane Ellis is a patient rider and should be okay from just off the lead with DON CHASSIS, stalking FEARLESS SAMURAI before attacking in the stretch run.
