Maragh, Johnson win at Fort Erie
FORT ERIE, Canada, CMC:
Jamaicans Kirk Johnson and Tony Maragh each rode a winner on Sunday's eight-race card at Fort Erie.
Johnson partnered with five-year-old mare Bella Humor - the favourite - to beat the three-year-old and upward fillies and mares by a length, going 51/2 furlongs in race three.
Maragh also reached the winners' enclosure when he piloted favourite Ms Forester to a three-quarter length victory over the three-year-old and upward fillies and mares over seven furlongs in race five.
Meanwhile, veteran Barbadian jockey Chris Griffith produced a double as he tasted success for the first time this season at the quaint border oval.
The 46-year-old captured race two over six furlongs with favourite Into the Future and followed up by carrying 2-1 choice Tallahassee to victory in race four over in another six-furlong trip.
Griffith, a four-time Fort Erie champion, is now three behind leaders Melanie Pinto and Helen Marie Vanek both on five wins in the season which got going May 30.
He opened his account by making all the running with five-year-old bay gelding Into the Future to beat the three-year-old and upwards by half-length.
The pair duelled with Lake Simcoe and Arizona Baby through the half in 46.77 seconds before getting clear at the top of the strength and holding sway in the lane.
Griffith's second win came in a tight finish when he partnered with three-year-old filly Tallahassee to edge the three-year-old and upward maiden fillies and mares.
Tallahassee opened up a small lead on the turn but was caught in the stretch by Stride of Pride and was forced to duel to the wire before winning by a neck.
