Muir lands double at Northlands - Nelson third in standings
EDMONTON, Canada, CMC:
Rising star Jamaican Jockey Shamaree Muir rode two winners on Friday's seven-race card at Northlands Park.
Muir found success in race four aboard 3-1 choice Tara's Way and followed up with victory in race six with 22-1 longshot Cause She's Blonde.
The Jamaican is fifth in the standings, on eight winners, behind six-time reigning champion Rico Walcott, who also had a brace and returned to ride four winners at the western Canada racetrack on Saturday.
Walcott, 28, who has swept the last six jockey titles, won half the races on the eight-race programme to further widen his lead in the standings with just five weeks gone in the new season. He is already 14 wins clear on 26, with Jamaican Dane Nelson second on 12 and Barbadian Kyle Carter third on 11.
On Friday, Muir produced a gate-to-wire effort, steering four-year-old bay filly Tara's Way to an impressive 21/2-length score over the three-year-old and upward fillies and mares.
Going 61/2 furlongs, they duelled with My Kathleen through the first quarter but took control passing the quarter pole to erase any doubt about the winner in the lane.
Muir was back in winners row over an identical distance when he combined with three-year-old bay filly Cause She's Blonde to dismiss the three-year-old and upward maiden fillies and mares by three lengths.
