Fillies get inside draw - She's A Maneater, Marlene My Love against rail for Derby
CHAMPION trainer Wayne DaCosta's pair of Triple Crown aspirants, the filly SHE'S A MANEATER and the gelding FEARLESS SAMURAI, were yesterday drawn at post-positions one and 10, respectively, for Saturday's $8m Boom Jamaica Derby at 12 furlongs.
DaCosta's pair is among 13 runners including Richard Azan's MARKET FORCE and Dwight Chen's MARLENE MY LOVE, winners of the Lotto Classic Governor's Cup and Jamaica Oaks, major 10-furlong prep races for the Derby.
SHE'S A MANEATER and FEARLESS SAMURAI are on course for a shot at the Triple Crown having won April's 1000 and 2000 Guineas at a mile, respectively. The Triple Crown comprises the Guineas, Derby and next month's Jamaica St Leger, also at 10 furlongs.
MARLENE MY LOVE, who clocked 2:08.3 in the April 29 Oaks, bettering the colt's 2:09.3, clocked in the Governor's Cup on May 27, is drawn at post-position two with Jevvanne Erwin aboard, breaking from beside SHE'S A MANEATER.
SHE'S A MANEATER, chosen by DaCosta's stable jockey Omar Walker after being torn between the filly and FEARLESS SAMURAI, had missed the Jamaica Oaks with a pulled muscle. However, she returned a week later to beat open allowance company at a mile.
MARKET FORCE, drawn out wide at post-position 12, will be again ridden by Shane Ellis after being awarded the Lotto Classic Governor's Cup in the stewards' room following the disqualification of HENRY THE SECOND, who had twice hindered him inside the final furlong.
Apprentice Linton Steadman will partner FEARLESS SAMURAI for DaCosta. The gelding had passed the post third with topweight 126lb in the Governor's Cup behind disqualified HENRY THE SECOND and MARKET FORCE, giving weight to both his rivals.
In Saturday's Derby, MARKET FORCE and HENRY THE SECOND, who had carried 120 and 110lb, respectively, will sit level with FEARLESS SAMURAI at 126. The fillies, SHE'S A MANEATER, MARLENE MY LOVE, GREAT FAITH and THORNHILL MISS, get a sex allowance, and will carry 121lb.
Apprentice Linton Steadman will partner FEARLESS SAMURAI whereas Panamanian Dick Cardenas, a two-time champion at Caymanas Park, has been retained aboard lightly raced HENRY THE SECOND.
SOTOMAYOR, fourth in the Governor's Cup, will have the services of three-time champion jockey Dane Nelson, flown in from Northlands Park, Canada, by the colt's connections.
