Erwin found guilty on seven sex charges
Racehorse Jockey Jevvanne Erwin, the proposed rider of MARLENE MY LOVE in today's Boom upcoming Jamaica Derby was found guilty of several sexual offences in the St Catherine Circuit Court yesterday.
The jury retired for 45 minutes and returned a unanimous guilty verdict on all seven offences.
Erwin, 25, was convicted of one count of grievous sexual assault, three counts of unlawful detention with intent to engage in sexual assault, and three counts unlawful detention with intent to engage in grievous sexual assault.
Erwin was further remanded until July 7 when he is to be sentenced.
During the one-week trial the defence called several character witnesses to speak on behalf of the accused.
Among those who spoke highly of Erwin were Ed Barnes and owner Howard Hamilton from the horseracing industry.
It is said that Erwin along with other men took turns in the 2012 sexual assault of a teenager. He was charged following an investigation by the St Catherine South police.
Erwin had been scheduled to ride MARLENE MY LOVE in today's Derby pending the outcome of the trial. Robert Halledeen has been named as his replacement.
