Tyson Gay blamed a stumble from the blocks after being eliminated from the men's 100 metres in the first round at the US Track and Field Championships on Thursday.

Gay was racing only eight months after his daughter Trinity was shot and killed in Kentucky.

He will try to make the US team to the World Championships once again with the men's 200 metres this evening.

The athlete was third in his 100m heat in 10.17 seconds, far off his American record 9.69 seconds which he set in 2009.

"I had a slight stumble in the blocks and couldn't really recover," Gay told reporters on Thursday evening in California.

The 2015 World Championships 100m bronze medallist Trayvon Bromell was also eliminated after he finished third in his heat in a time of 10.22 seconds.
