Whitmore unplugs 'Stone Love'
National coach Theodore 'Tappa' Whitmore has dropped Jamie 'Stone Love' Robinson from the squad to face Trinidad & Tobago in a friendly international on August 24 after the player failed to turn up for training for his Premier League club UWI.
Robinson, a former Tivoli Gardens player, has represented the University of the West Indies (UWI) in the Red Stripe Premier League for the last two seasons. The player has not yet turned up for the club's pre-season training with the RSPL set to begin on September 3.
Whitmore, who replaced Robinson with Jamiel Hardware of Boys' Town last Wednesday, pointed to overall discipline of players.
"Again, we keep telling the players about the bigger picture and when you look at Jamie Robinson not been in pre-season with UWI, we can't reward a player for nothing," Whitmore told STAR Sports during the Reggae's Boyz training session last Friday at UWI.
"It would be unfair to other players for us to take Jamie in the team to play Trinidad and Tobago," he added, noting that the UWI player has been in a local pool.
"What is the reason for him to not be in pre-season with the league set to start in a couple weeks," Whitmore mused.
"He is a national player, so he needs to be setting good example at his club," the former national captain and star midfielder stressed.
"We can't reward players for that sort of stuff and anybody who knows me knows that regardless of who (it is), I am not going down that road with any player. We have to send a positive message," Whitmore concluded.
The full squad is: Amal Knight; Ladale Ritchie; Javain Brown; Rosario Harriott; Jamiel Hardware; Alex Marshall; Kaheem Parris; Jermaine Johnson; Marvin Morgan; Vishinul Harris; Fabian Reid; Leonardo Rankine; Shamar Nicholson; Shaven-Sean Paul; Michael Binns; Ewan Grandison; Ricardo Morris, and Rondee Smith.
