Muir lands $50,000 race in Canada
CALGARY, Canada (CMC):
Barbadian jockey Rico Walcott won the feature CAN$100,000 Harvest Plate Stakes aboard 4-1 bet Hemlock Channel while Jamaican Shamaree Muir took the undercard $50,000 Founders Distaff Handicap, as Caribbean riders once again dominated the programme at Century Downs here Sunday.
The 28-year-old Walcott held the eight-year-old chestnut gelding well off the pace for most of the seven furlong trip before getting to the front in the stretch and cruising to the wire 2-1/2 lengths clear in a time of one minute, 22.75 seconds.
Muir, 22, grabbed his share of the spotlight when he steered four-year-old bay filly Tara's Way to victory in the Founders Distaff in race seven over a mile and sixteenth for the three-year-old and upward fillies and mares.
The two stakes wins headlined a plethora of successes on the 11-race card for Caribbean jockeys.
Jamaican Dane Nelson rode a brace, winning race four over 6-/2 furlongs with 2-1 chance Head of the Nerd before capturing race eight over 6-1/2 furlongs with favourite Spectrus.
Trinidadian Ridge Balgobin also scored with a double, while there were also wins for Barbadians Rey Williams and Antonio Whitehall.
