Bridgmohan hot at Fair Grounds
NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana (CMC):
Jamaican jockey Shaun Bridgmohan kicked off the new Fair Grounds season in style Saturday, capturing the US$50,000 Si Cima Overnight Stakes as part of a brace at the southern United States oval.
Going a mile on turf, the 38-year-old partnered with 2-1 choice Inveniam Viam to beat the three-year-old and upward fillies and mares by a length in a time of one minute, 37.84 seconds to clinch one of four added-money races on the 10-race card.
The victory was the fifth in nine outings for the five-year-old bay mare, which has now collected about US$150,000 in earnings.
Fifty-nine-to-one long-shot Pera hammered out the early fractions, posting 24.90 seconds for the first quarter and 50.21 for the half, with Calamity Jane tracking from second, while Bridgmohan stalked from sixth with Inveniam Viam.
Pera led off the final turn but Bridgmohan got the best out of the Inveniam Viam in the stretch, thundering down the lane to hit the front inside the final furlong and surge to the wire.
Pera ran second while favourite Dontmesswithjoanne finished third.
Bridgmohan also tasted success four races later in race nine when he guided 8-1 bet Feisty Embrace to a narrow victory in a six-furlong contest for two-year-old fillies.
The pair raced off the pace set by Cool Kitty before challenging at the three-eighth pole, duelling with favourite Andthebandplayedon and outlasting her rival by a neck at the wire.
The new Fair Grounds season runs until March 31, 2018.
