All-island champs - Herbert Morrison win elusive title
Coach of Herbert Morrison Technical High School (HMTHS) basketball team, Dave 'Puey' Black, has described their first ISSA All-island Under-19 basketball title as 'a big achievement'.
The western Jamaica team defeated Camperdown High School 52-51 at the National Arena in Kingston last Friday to lift the title.
Black, who guided HMTHS to three previous all-island finals, said his team showed real character.
"The fight in this year's team was the difference when it came to the all-island. The guys would go out there and fight if they are down so they kept on willing the team, willing themselves, and they fought to the end," said Black.
Looking back at the final, Black conceded that Camperdown dominated the opening segment of the game. "In the second half our big players started to step up and we fought back," said Black.
"Our top three (Alek Gilchrist, Brendon Dawkins and David Gordon) showed up but the biggest one was David Gordon, who is just 16. Coming from the under-16 (last year) straight into the U-19 and leading the team in a finals shows his talent and character."
Gordon, who was voted the finals MVP, top scored with 20 points and 18 rebounds.
"I am elated right now, it's been a dream come true. Four years ago, I was here starting out with the older boys. They were the ones who gave me the drive to come now and finish the legacy they started," said Gordon.
He told WESTERN STAR that he looking forward to bigger things for the future.
"I'm looking forward to working with coach Black. He is my national Under-16 coach and we play for the same NBL team so it has been good working together," he said.
"I'm looking forward to leading the younger generation. Hard work is going to reap success."
