'Concrete' Moncriffe starts bid for second contender title
Devon 'Concrete' Moncriffe, a crowd favourite in boxing circles, will start his bid for a second Wray and Nephew Contender title tonight, when he takes on Tyler Wilson from Ontario, Canada, over five rounds at the Chinese Benevolent Association auditorium.
The main bout starts at 9.30 and will be preceded by two amateur bouts at 8.30.
Moncriffe was originally scheduled to meet Daniel Roach, but Roach pulled out late last week, and Wilson has come in as a substitute. Most of the Canadian's experience has been as a mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter, according to him, and he will be making his debut as a professional boxer tonight.
Moncriffe, who is 41 and has a 12-8-1 record, won the title in 2013 as a middleweight. The competition this year is in the welterweight division, with a top weight of 147 pounds, and he told STAR Sports that for his height of 5' 6", he believes that this is his best weight class.
Best weight class
"As a middleweight, I was always going up against much bigger 160 pound fighters. This I think is my best weight class, and I am hoping to win my second Contender title this year" he said.
According to Moncriffe, his training has been going well. He took off the excess weight gradually, so it has not been burdensome, and he has been having some excellent sparring sessions.
"I am feeling very confident and I plan to give my fans a good show tonight" he predicted. He, however, enters the ring with a spotty record.
In eight fights since 2017, he has won two, lost five and drew one. In his last fight on October 21 last year in Canada, he suffered a first-round tko loss to Ricardo Salas, who is in the Contender series this year.
He says that he has put that loss behind him. "That was just one of those things. He caught me by surprise and I lost. I am looking forward now, not behind, and perhaps I will meet him again " he said.
The winner of the competition will take home $2 million, runner-up - $500,000, third place - $250,000 and fourth place - $200,000.
