Russell mercilessly beats Trinbago as Tallawahs win first CLP game
Skipper Andre Russell became the second man to take a hat-trick and score a hundred in the same T20 match.
The Jamaica Tallawahs took 3-38 and then sscored 121 not-out to propel his team to the unlikeliest of victories over reigning Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) champions Trinbago Knight Riders at Queen's Park Oval.
England's Joe Denly was the first to accomplish such enviable feat, having done so for Kent last month in the Vitality Blast.
Friday night, the Tallawahs appeared dead and buried as they slumped to 41/5 in response to TKR's Hero CPL record score of 223/6.
But Russell had other ideas as he blasted his way to a quite ridiculous century having earlier taken a hat-trick at the back end of the Knight Riders' own extraordinary innings.
His hundred came up from a Hero CPL record-equalling 40 balls with a record-breaking 12th six.
The masterful batsman ended on 121 not out from 49 balls with six fours to go with those 13 sixes.
Two of Russell's sixes cleared not only the ropes but also the Queen's Park Oval stands. Dwayne Bravo shuffled his bowling options but could not stop the flow as six after six rained down on a disbelieving crowd in Trinidad.
Russell found a willing ally in Kennar Lewis, who made 52 from 35 in a 161-run partnership.
Trinbago Knight Riders 223/6 in 20 overs (Colin Munro 61, Brendon McCullum 56; Andre Russell 3-38)
Jamaica Tallawahs 225/6 in 19.3 overs (Andre Russell 121*, Kennar Lewis 52; Ali Khan 3-24)
Result: Tallawahs win by four wickets.
