No stopping She's A Maneater
SHE'S A MANEATER gets another chance to show off her versatility, taking on the best sprinters in the country, for the second time in a little over three months, aiming to add tomorrow's six-furlong None Such Trophy to the Lotto Sprint, which she won by three lengths in May.
It's basically the same cast from SHE'S A MANEATER's Eros Trophy victory on July 28 in which she made a mockery of rivals at seven furlongs, winning by five and a half lengths, as if asking, "Who's next?".
Champion trainer Wayne DaCosta has SHE'S A MANEATER and three stablemates in the None Such, one of whom, MR UNIVERSE, puts any plans the opposition might have, in quite a conundrum.
SHE'S A MANEATER isn't a typical sprinter, but a classy middle-distance runner, who, at the right handicaps, with the right pace, can do just about anything asked of her, going any distance.
Therefore, having won the Lotto Sprint at five and a half furlongs, carrying 123lb, convincingly beating MONEY MAGNET, SIEMPRE BUENO and CHACE THE GREAT, the extra half-furlong of the None Such, with MR UNIVERSE capable of running the opposition ragged on the lead, could be a mere formality for SHE'S A MANEATER- even though she's three pounds heavier.
Anthony Nunes has been trying his very best to find a way around the DaCosta armada with SIEMPRE BUENO, who, truth be told, ran a cracker in the Lotto Sprint, overhauling MR UNIVERSE and sprinting two lengths clear a furlong out but had no answer when SHE'S A MANEATER pulled up to his bumper a half-furlong out.
The drive-by was devastating, a final time of 1:05.2, three-fifths of a second outside SAINT CECELIA and A KING IS BORN's joint stakes record of 1:04.4, which left SIEMPRE BUENO winded and relegated to fifth, four and three-quarter lengths behind SHE'S A MANEATER - an almost seven-length turnaround on the lead he held at the furlong pole.
Nunes, it is understood, believes Plan B is workable, which is not to engage MR UNIVERSE on the lead, sit tight and try getting first run on SHE'S A MANEATER when the speed collapses.
That's an admirable thought with an eight-pound swing in SIEMPRE BUENO's favour. However, allowing MR UNIVERSE to swing on the lead with Gary Richards, a horse that churned out 1:11.1 for six furlongs in the Thoroughbred Hall Of Fame Stakes, could leave SIEMPRE BUENO flat-footed when SHE'S A MANEATER makes her move.
Sitting $3m behind DaCosta in their now private battle atop the trainers' standings, Nunes needs a way around SHE'S A MANEATER but the door is closed in the None Such Trophy.
