‘Speedy’ Williams moves to Miami FC
A month after his departure from United Soccer League (USL) Championship side Louisville City SC, national midfielder Devon 'Speedy' Williams has found a new home in Florida.
The 28-year-old Williams was announced last Friday as the newest signing of Miami FC for the 2021 season pending league and federation approval. Williams will be joining the South Florida outfit after four seasons with Louisville City, which included winning back-to-back championships in his first two seasons.
Miami FC technical director and head coach Paul Dalglish says that Williams brings championship pedigree to the team and believes that he is the "best player of his kind in the USL".
"He is incredibly mobile, defensively excellent and a magician with the ball. Furthermore, he is a proven winner having won three USL Championships," Daglish said. "A winner culture is created by the people you have at the club and this is another player that has the correct mentality to play here."
19 APPEARANCES DESPITE COVID
Despite a season that was hampered by the coronavirus pandemic, Williams managed to make 19 appearances for Louisville last season, scoring four goals and registering one assist en route to a fourth consecutive appearance in the Eastern Conference championship. Unfortunately, they were defeated 2-1 by national prospect Jordan Scarlett and the Tampa Bay Rowdies. He led the league in most completed passes (831) and finished second in recoveries among outfield players.
Williams has made 111 appearances for Louisville since joining Louisville in 2017 and provided the winning assist for the club's first title that year.
He started his professional career with New York Red Bulls II in 2015 where he captured the first of his three career championship titles. He has made 12 appearances for the Reggae Boyz with his last game being the 2-0 win against Aruba in October 2019
