Shaw registers third hat-trick of the season
After a quiet return to the French Division One feminine season last week, national striker Khadija Shaw was at her goal-scoring best, netting her third hat-trick of the season as her club Bordeaux hammered Stade Reims 7-1 in their league fixture on Saturday at the Stade Sainte Germaine.
The 23-year-old Shaw scored in the 10th, 40th and 66th minutes to help Bordeaux to bounce back from their defeat to league leaders Paris Saint Germain (PSG) on January 15, and in the process, recorded the third biggest win in club history. In a campaign that has seen her already surpass her debut season total of 10 goals, she cemented her lead in the golden boot race with 17 goals from 13 games played.
Bordeaux only needed five minutes to assert their authority through Ines Jaurena with a well-taken effort. Shaw doubled the advantage soon after as she got on the end of a Katja Snoeijs' cross and slotted home past Stade Reims' goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce. Bordeaux would go on to lead 4-0 thanks to another Shaw goal from a Snoeijs assist, as well as an individual effort from Maelle Garbino but would not stop there. Shaw completed her third hat-trick of the season in the 66th after Garbino scored her second of the game earlier in the 53rd minute. Claire Lavogez completed the rout in the 76th minute.
French football journalist Daniel Marques was impressed at the pace of Shaw's goals this year, comparing her to 2018 Women's Ballon D'or winner Ada Hegerberg of Lyon.
"Shaw continues to [cause] panic with 17 goals in 13 games of D1Arkema. You have to go back to 17-18 to see a player with such a total at this stage of the season (Hegerberg with 21 goals)," Marques tweeted on Saturday. Hegerberg would go on to score 31 goals that season.
The golden boot battle between the Reggae Girl and PSG striker Marie Katoto has intensified as she scored twice in their 5-0 win over Guingamp on Saturday. Her brace takes her to 15 goals, two goals shy of Shaw. Bordeaux remain in third place with 26 points, solidifying their hold over the final Champions League spot with a six-point gap over nearest challengers Montpellier, who are in fourth with 20 points. Bordeaux travel to Dijion on Saturday, a team that Shaw scored a hat-trick against previously this season.
