Got pregnant on the job

May 11, 2017

Dear Pastor,

This is the first time I am writing to you, but I am having a problem and I need you to help me. I am 18 years old, and I am working in a guest house. The owners of the guest house are very strict and workers are not supposed to sleep with guests.

One of the guys who stayed at the guest house came on business and stayed for one week. He fell in love with me, and I took chance and went out with him. It happened twice. He told me that he has a wife, but he can't resist me. He wanted to take me out the night before he was leaving, but I could not go because I was on duty.

When I had my break, I went into his room, and he was waiting for me. I had sex with him quickly, and he gave me US$70. He did not use a condom, and I was in such a hurry that I did not think about it. I got pregnant. When I told him on the phone that I missed my period and I could be pregnant, he told me to get rid of it. I did not get rid of it. I had the baby and registered him in another man's name. The man agreed for me to do that.

The real father promised that he would return to Jamaica soon. He should have been here three weeks ago, but I have not seen him. Nobody at the guest house knows that I had sex with this guy. And nobody at my home knows who the real father is.

The man whose name the child is carrying always liked me, but I never liked him.

Please help me.

Dear G.C.,

You don't have your head well screwed on. These men come to Jamaica and tell girls all sorts of foolishness, and they believe them. If you had kept yourself quiet, you wouldn't have got pregnant. You were performing room service that was not approved by the company and you got caught. You got paid for the service you rendered. You are fortunate the other girls didn't see you when you went into this man's room. They probably would have reported you, and you could have lost your job.

I hope this man will send you money on a regular basis to support his child. Take care of your baby. I hope you know the man's address. When he comes back to Jamaica, both of you can just discuss this problem together and put in place some sort of arrangement to educate your child.

I am sure you know the saying, "Wah sweet nanny goat a go run him belly". Always remember that a woman can get pregnant if she has unprotected sex.
