Parents treat me like a child

September 06, 2019

Dear Pastor,

I am 20 years old, and I'm living with my parents. I know that should be a good thing because I don't have to worry about paying bills or rent, but my parents treat me like I'm still a child. They don't allow me to go anywhere but church, and this causes me to feel lonely at times, and I also suffer from depression.

I used to look forward to church on a Sunday morning, but now, I don't even want to hear the word 'church'.

I do things that I'm not supposed to do, knowing the consequences that come after, but it's like I don't care anymore.

I recently got a job, and I am thinking of moving out to live with my boyfriend. We've been going together for one year and four months.

I really want to make my parents proud, but I fail every single time I try. Do you have any advice for me?

A.P.

Dear A.P.,

Stop blaming your parents for the life you are living. You are old enough to turn your own house key.

You say that your parents are treating you like a child and that all they want you to do is attend church. Well, if you want to do other things, it is really up to you.

You know that they can't stop you from having a man. You have one in your life. You don't have to remain in their house and save rent money.

If you want to be free and do your own thing, you can. Don't be a hypocrite. Stop blaming your parents.

They have done everything they can for you, but you can go on your own at any time. I repeat, stop blaming them. You are responsible for your own life.
