Stone Love rocks Spender's Café launch
By KANDRE' MCDONALD, Freelance Writer MEMBERS OF THE Stone Love Movement who were assigned the task of selecting duties at the launch of Spender's Café, 1 Aldington Road, St. Andrew had the full attention of the patrons throughout their set last Friday night. The Stone Love crew, which has enjoyed more than thirty-one years in the music business, played a superb set. The Stone Love team was playing alongside 'The Captain' Colin Hines of FAME FM and were tight in their musical selection. Their set was well coordinated and the attitude of the patrons, who were steadily trickling into the venue, showed that they really appreciated it. The Stone Love selectors played a rhythm driven set in chronological order, starting from popular rhythms such as the 'Pepperseed'. They used songs like Ole Dawg and Dawgy Style to take the place apart, added to this were some of Baby Cham's earlier hits. The selectors then exploited the later part of the nineties and dug up the 'Bruk Out' rhythm. Selections from this rhythm provided sufficient fuel to have parts of the growing crowd bobbing their heads in approval, while others went all out getting their groove on. The Stone Love selectors were enjoying turntable duties so much that at 12:57 a.m. when it was announced that Colin Hines would be taking over the controls after three more songs they extended his waiting period. When 'The Captain' finally got his hands on the controls he proved that he was not going to be less successful than the Stone Love selectors.
Hardcore
He commenced his set with some favourable hardcore hip-hop and had the younger patrons getting into a 'crazy' yet reserved mood. The exuberant crowd, that have now grown to fully occupy an upper balcony section, were then moving in full force to songs such as Fifty Cent's P.I.M.P. and Ludacris' Move B.t.h. 'The Captain' then used songs like Pon Di River, Blase, Signal Di Plane, and others to generate a 'burning' dance frenzy in the venue. With the credible musical selection aside, the patrons were treated to a venue that was very comfortable and welcoming. Drinks were readily available as bars were located both upstairs and downstairs. Added to the comfort of the venue were the bartenders that were sexily dressed and easy to look at. The only downfall to the staging of an event of this nature is the location of the venue, which is situated in a well-populated residential area.
