Members of the team are from left Marlon Thomas, Marsharn Golding, Andranio Anderson and Andrew Francis (Captain). - Carlington WilmotCLARENDON COLLEGE ON Monday night recorded the widest margin of victory in the TVJ Schools' Challenge Quiz 2004 Competition when they defeated Tivoli Gardens 51-5. In the process, Clarendon College became the fourth team to go past 50 points this season. However, despite being happy for the win, Clarendon's coach Kevin Pryce was cautious but optimistic that his team could lift the title for this year. "I'm happy for the victory. It's just one small step that we have made towards winning. We have a couple more steps that are left on the road to victory. We intend to work on all areas as some simple mistakes were made. In the upcoming weeks we will be dealing with these mistakes," he said. In the one-sided encounter, Clarendon College started off briskly as they answered their first five questions correctly. In comparison, their opponents succeeded in answering only one of their first five questions accurately.
Annihilation continued
Clarendon continued dominating the first section as they accumulated another five points as their opponents seemed out of touch with what was going on. When the section ended, the scores originally read Clarendon College 10, Tivoli Gardens High 5. However, during the break the judges ruled that Tivoli Gardens should be awarded a point for a physics question previously given as incorrect. Tivoli had answered 0.8 while the answer needed was 80 percent. However, the judges' accepted Tivoli's answer and the scores at that time read 10-6. The speed section which is the minute segment, was no different from the first. Clarendon College amassed 10 points out of a possible 11 while their opponents only got two. The annihilation continued in the second and third minutes with Clarendon collecting 10 more points in comparison to their opponents one. During the break, the scores were again adjusted. This time it was in favour of Clarendon College who got a point for a Bible Knowledge question. The Clarendon based school had answered by giving the name of the person who had requested John the Baptist's head. However, presenter Francois St. Juste stated that the answer was incorrect and said it was one of Herod's relatives. During the break, the answer was contested as it was revealed that the name given was that of Herod's relative. Hence, the score at the end of the second section was 31-9. In the final section it was still Clarendon College, who raced to 45 points before they fell to 43. They however, redeemed themselves and went to 51 before falling to 49. They then answered the final question correctly and ended the match at 51. Tivoli, who were silent for the most part attempted two questions but were unsuccessful on both occasions and ended the match on five points. Consequently, the final score was 51-5. Tivoli's coach Viviene Wellington said her team suffered from lack of preparation and inexperience but would be a force to reckon with in upcoming years. "It was their first time and they were slow to the buzzer. We had a limited preparation as we didn't have enough material to train with. But we were here for the experience and in upcoming years we will be doing better," she said. The teams: Clarendon College: Andrew Francis (Captain), Andranio Anderson, Marsharn Golding and Marlon Thomas. Tivoli Gardens High: Allan Spencer (Captain), Kelvin Nolan, Nicholas Ellis and Hurraine Hutchinson. In today's match Ewarton High will play Wolmer's Girls.
