The Titchfield High School's Schools' Challenge Quiz Team, after their win. - CARLINGTON WILMOTA LATE RALLY by Immaculate Conception was not enough to prevent them from being defeated 36-44 by Titchfield High as action continued in the TVJ Schools' Challenge Quiz on Thursday.
Immaculate who was playing without one of their players from the last match were outplayed for most of the first two rounds. It was not until the final section that they showed the same quality they had displayed in the previous round when they defeated Lewisville 52-13. In fact, had they played in a similar manner, then the match would have been a much closer encounter as both teams scored the same number of points in section three.
"Immaculate played the best they could given the fact that one of our key players had a UWI Scholarship Exam today and was unable to play so we had to use another player. We congratulate Titchfield though on a match well played," said Andrew Townsend, coach of Immaculate.
However, on Thursday night, Titchfield High from Portland would not be denied.
When the game begun, it was Immaculate that got off the mark first, as they raced to a four-two lead at the end of the first six questions. But between question six and question 10, the match changed in favour of Titchfield. From question four until question 15, Titchfield answered every question correctly. In comparison, their opponents were never able to develop a consistent rhythm. As such, Section One ended 13-10 in favour of the victors.
When the section ended the scores read by presenter Marlene Stephenson said 12-10 in favour of Titchfield. However, the scores were adjusted and Titchfield received an extra point as there was an error in the scoring.
In the second section where teams are each given three 60 second periods, Titchfield picked up from where they left off. In the first minute they answered their first four questions correctly and went on to amass eight points out of 13 questions. Their opponents on the other hand could muster only five from 12.
The second minute saw both teams answering less questions than the first. However, both recovered in the final minute and when the section ended the scores read 31-22 for Titchfield.
During the break, the scores were again reviewed and Titchfield lost a point for an incorrect response that had come before the right answer. The question, "What does the abbreviation NHDC stand for?". Titchfield had answered National Housing Trust but later said National Housing Development Corporation. As a result, the judges ruled that the answer was incorrect and a point was deducted.
In section three, Immaculate rallied as they fought hard to secure a victory. However, Titchfield were equal to the task and the match ended 44-36.
But, the scores originally read 44-38 and during the break Immaculate lost two points as the judges ruled that an answer supplied for a science question was incorrect. As a result the final scores read 44-36.
In summing up the match, Devon Farr, coach of Titchfield said; "we strengthened the arts more because we knew Immaculate was strong in the arts. The guys worked hard and we are one step closer to winning the title but there are still more sleepless nights left and the guys are still working hard as there are still weaknesses to iron out."
Next match: Hampton versus Hillel.
