WE LIVE IN a world where things are changing by the minute, and not necessarily for the better. A world where beliefs are dying or are replaced by masquerades of themselves, where faith is a forgotten concept and quite often a myth to be laughed at.
Dare to dream. Only then can we truly be free. The evidence is all around us. People all over have given up dreaming of a better tomorrow, content instead to eke out the last possible bit of misery from a downtrodden today.
The nation's children, for the most part, cannot be bothered with reading and hence miss the doors into the wonderful worlds that most books are. All they know is the onslaught of dark images, of poverty, crime and violence which permeate every aspect of life in Jamaica today. So they respond in kind to each other, fighting with knives and carrying guns instead of learning and trying to make the world a better place, content to descend into the miasma.
Of course, there are some candles lit in the stygian darkness trying to turn us back from going unwittingly and foolishly into the night. The JCDC and their various efforts like the Mento Yard and Jonkunnoo revivals. The revamped Peace and Love in Society programme.
These are lights which, if given the chance, can blaze forth and drive back the darkness, showing the way to a better today and a brighter tomorrow. However, we cannot continue to stay on the inside looking out from our homes to other people to make a difference.
