Ode to bad leadership

I HAVE LONG been curious about our Prime Minister P. J. Patterson's way of thinking. However, since a one-on-one interview would prove to be impossible and perhaps not exactly desirable, I started fishing around for another candidate to get some insight into the matter.

As luck would have it, I managed to have a sit-down with the Most Honourable Peter Joe Peterkin, the leader of a small island, which he asked me not to name, for over a decade.

He has come in for more than his fair share of flak over the years but somehow has managed to survive, and to keep getting re-elected. So here goes the interview:

Chaos: Some of your ministers have been, well, implicated in scandals of the worst kind, with charges such as the misappropriation of public funds and at best, could be said to have made some rather questionable decisions. Yet, unless it was close to a general election, very little, if anything, in the way of action seems to have been taken where they are concerned. Why is this the case?

Peterkin: Listen, we all need to live and let die. We all need to let time go by. If wishes were horses beggars would ride and there is little I could do without them by my side. Big houses and SUVs are the songs they will sing, and who am I to stop the things that will these things bring?

Chaos: Ummm -- okay, you just lost me there --

Peterkin: Put it this way. If you got it, flaunt it. People have short memories, so you can get away with murder. Say you are going to do this, but do that instead. Sure there will be a hue and cry, but just ride the wave and it will all die. Better yet, just wait for the Opposition to do something strange they always do and all the millions we lost will be but a memory too.
