THE EDITOR MADAM:
What has happened to our gag reflex? You know - that thing within us that causes us to feel as if we want to throw up when we come in contact with anything that is gross, disgusting or just plain awful.
The other day I was doing some shopping or trying to when I went into a store to look at their collection of shoes. While in there I could not believe my ears when I heard the lyrics of a particular song blaring in the store. It was so disgusting and sick that I actually stopped and looked around to see if others were disturbed by the song as much as I was, and alas, there was no one!
Don't get me wrong, I like a good dancehall tune every now and again so it is not as if I am totally opposed to the genre.
It is as if the entertainers of this country are competing to see who can sing the most depraved, disgusting, and degrading songs possible. For a lot of these recent songs have no love or intimacy, not even real sex in them. What I am hearing in most of these songs sounds to me like a description of brutal rape! It is disheartening to think that persons actually have these lewd thoughts, but to think that these people will sink so low as to put these thoughts to music and call it art is just preposterous. Furthermore, it is even more appalling to think that the public at least a great part of it will actually gravitate to these songs!
Psychological issues
What kind of society have we become when it is okay for adults and children alike to freely sing songs in public or elsewhere that do nothing but degrade women and sometimes, even children?
Sometimes I think that some of these entertainers have some serious psychological issues with women. I think that they do not love women in general. For nobody who loves or even likes women can in good conscience sing such hateful, disrespectful and degrading songs about women.
There is more that I would like to address but some other time. So in closing, if it is for no other reason but for our children and the future of this nation, please let us get back our 'gag reflex'!
I am, etc.,
