PARADOF helps crippled couple
A PARADOF representative shakes hands with Olga Campbell, sitting beside her husband, Osmond. - Contributed OLGA AND OSMOND Campbell's plea for help as been answered by at least one organisation. The organisation that has come to the aid of the couple is the Paraplegic Development and Outreach Foundation (PARADOF), which provided $100,000 in food items, a wheelchair and a walker to the couple. The donations were made on May 1. Olga Campbell had written to THE STAR in April seeking assistance for herself and her husband who were destitute. After receiving the letter, THE STAR visited the community and wrote about the couple's plight.
Depend on neighbours
The couple are unable to help themselves after Mr. Campbell's leg was amputated last year after a blister he had, became gangrenous. Mrs. Campbell has been confined to a wheelchair since 1991. As a result of their situation, the couple had to depend on the Cameron Hill community in St. Elizabeth, where they reside, for for assistance. But, for the next few weeks at least, the Campbell's will be able to provide for themselves. "I'm very grateful for the help. It's not much but we are grateful as it can do for the next few weeks. Right now as we speak my husband is sitting on a chair and preparing a meal for the both of us," said Mrs. Campbell. Errington Pellington, founder and director of PARADOF, said his organisation made the donations after reading about the couple's plight in THE STAR. "The aim of the organisation is to provide for the paraplegic. After we read the story we decided to take food items, a wheelchair for Mrs. Campbell and a walker for her husband," he said. He added that the organisation was in the process of seeking help for the couple through the Black River's Mayor's office. "We are trying to set up a Support Unit for them as well as other disabled persons outside of Kingston," said Mr. Pellington. However, while additional help is being sought, the couple is grateful for what they have received. "My husband and myself are happy because (for the time being) we can provide for ourselves. We are grateful for the help of the community but we are also thankful that someone read about our situation and decided to help us," she said.
