16 year-old schoolgirl dies in car crash

A TRAFFIC ACCIDENT on the Greenside main road in Trelawny on Sunday claimed the life of a 16 year-old schoolgirl of the Muschette High School in the parish and left two other men with injuries. The dead teenager has been identified as Kadian Edwards of a Granville address in Trelawny.

Reports from the Constabulary Communication Network (CCN) are that Edwards was a passenger in a Toyota Camry - registered 4542 DW - that was being driven by Shamar Hyatt of Perth Town, Trelawny, from Falmouth to Salt Marsh.

It is said that on reaching a section of the Greenside main road about 2:45 p.m., Hyatt reportedly lost control of the vehicle, which ran off the road and then crashed into a utility pole.

The police say the teenager, who was sitting in the front passenger seat, received injuries to the head. She was taken to hospital where she reportedly died while undergoing treatment. Hyatt and another male passenger sustained secondary bruises. The men were sent home after they were given medical attention. It is not known if manslaughter charges will be levelled against Hyatt.

The Falmouth Police are investigating the accident.
