OVER 80 SCHOOLS have entered for the 20th staging of the Sports Plus-sponsored Howard Jackson Relays set for tomorrow at Paul Bogle Junior High in Morant Bay, St Thomas, starting at 9:00 am.
With this being the first warm-up relay meet for the Gibson Relays, most of the top athletic powers in the country have confirmed their entry, including Vere Technical, St Jago, Queens, Immaculate and St Andrew among the girls, while Boys Champions Kingston College, Calabar, Jamaica College and Camperdown are sure to take part.
Apart from the myriad of over-distance relays (4x150m, 4x300m and 4x600m) for both boys and girls, new events instituted last year include the 100 metres Grand Prix Open for the fastest runners from each school, regardless of class, as well as the 800 metres for class two boys only.
The overall champion boys and girls school will win one ticket each to the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, USA, courtesy of sponsors, Sports Plus Limited.
Meet Director, Garth Gayle, believes that the new venue will ensure a smoother operation.
"It is clear that the meet had outgrown the Morant Bay High school ground, as well as the bigger Lyssons playfield which was our home for the past few years. Paul Bogle's (Junior High) is far more spacious and the track is much better as we saw last year. There is also unlimited space for parking.
The meet is named in honour of the late Howard Jackson, former Principal of Morant Bay High school. Entry fee is $200.
