Bogle's death shuts down sessions

winston sill - The Asylum Club in New Kingston remained closed for the Guinness Timeless Thursday Show on Thursday.

By GERMAINE SMITH, Staff Reporter

DANCEHALL entertainment has almost come to a grinding halt in Kingston's streets since Thursday night.

Streets which were usually buzzing with party hungry fans have remained empty for the most part. From the popular Guiness Timeless Thursdays at the Asylum to 'Hypnotiq Mondays', (also called 'Uptown Mondays'), things were quiet for dancehall sessions as the practitioners were reeling from the murder of prominent dancer, Bogle.

While most of the events were postponed on Thursday, by Monday at least one main area pulled favourable dancehall entertainment support. Knutsford Boulevard hosted the launch of the Asylum Night Club's 'Money Mondays' weekly session.

Though the streets were relatively empty, and the usual blasting of car horns as they hustle to park in Knutsford Boulevard was missing, the Monday night crowd on hand for the launch was fair.

The club was not packed, but it was teeming with women.

Rivals 'Ladies Night'

Females outnumbered men at least three to one for Money Mondays' first episode, and if this trend continues the session may rival 'Ladies Night' held at the same club on Tuesdays.

The women at 'Money Mondays' never held back either. They partied like people trying hard to enjoy the $300 cover charge they paid to get in. As they flashed skirt tails and fake hair while they danced, the resident sound system for the night, Cash Money, lived up to its 'money' name by randomly handing out cash gifts to those who impressed them and to the general crowd.

Master of ceremonies Beetle Bailey cheered two competitions in the early hours, one of which generated more laughter than entertainment. He hosted an impromptu modelling competition with girls randomly chosen from the audience. As sexy as the lot was, the chief cash prizes went to a Japanese national, and a woman with a cropped hair cut, who defied the conventional laws of beauty.

They laughed at her, but she laughed back and got paid for it. Everything came in good fun. No one got booed, and no one got chased off the stage.
