NORMAN MANLEY MISSED defeat by 10 points in its match against Mount Alvernia High School in yesterday's TVJ Schools' Challenge Quiz match.

Norman Manley defeated Mount Alvernia 24 -14. From the first section Norman Manley established a clear lead ahead of Mount Alvernia with nine points, while Mount Alvernia scored only three points.

In section two both teams sought to strengthen their lead. However, Norman Manley increased its score to 22, while Mount Alvernia increased its score to 10.

Section three turned out to be filled with surprises, as Norman Manley, which buzzed its way to 32 points soon buzzed its way down to 24 points missing defeat by 10 points.

Mount Alvernia scored four points in round three of the competition bringing their final score to 14 points.

Alexia Campbell, a member of the Mount Alvernia team, said the team was intimidated by the shouts from Norman Manley who appeared to be very confident. "I was timid, and the shouting from the other team made it difficult for us to stay focused," she said.

The team said the first section was the weakest portion of the match, but they were still happy to have made it to the second round since they had dropped out at the first round in 2003 when they last participated in the competition.

The Norman Manley team was happy about the win, but disappointed in their performance. "It didn't turn out as we planned, but the important thing is that we won," Dorian Beckford, a member of the Norman Manley team told THE STAR.

"We were too quick on the buzzer and we didn't wait for all the questions to be read. We lost our concentration," Diane Allison, another team member said.

Norman Manley team: Dorian Beckford, Diane Allison, Peter Brown, Ronald Emanuel.

Mount Alvernia team: Renee Shaw, Shaniek Robinson, Alexia Campbell, Shantelle Heavens.
