THE CASE AGAINST attorney-at-law Antoinette Haughton-Cardenas was put off yet again when she appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrates Court on Friday.
Haughton-Cardenas is before the courts on a charge of disorderly conduct and using abusive language to a police officer, arising from an incident that was committed on March 4, last year. Haughton-Cardenas has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
When the matter was brought before the Court of Petty Sessions at the Corporate Area Resident Magistrates' court, a new date was set for the trial to continue as Haughton-Cardenas' attorney was said to be off the island. As a result June 3 was set as the new date for the trial to continue.
Sixth time
Incidentally, this is at least the sixth time that the matter has been before the courts as a warrant was issued on at least two occasions after the she failed to appear in court.
It is alleged that on Thursday, March 4, last year, Cardenas started ranting boisterously when she was prevented from seeing her client, who was arrested for disorderly conduct and obstructing traffic. Cardenas was granted $5,000 bail in her own surety.
Cardenas' client, Patricia Joy Faulkner, had the charges of disorderly conduct dropped against her when the court was not satisfied that the officer had enough evidence against her. Cardenas had told the court on Monday, June 14, last year that the officer charged her client out of sheer malice and spite, rather than duty.
