ON SATURDAY NIGHT news broke that former National Footballer Peter Cargill died from injuries he received in a motor vehicle accident.
Incidentally, Cargill is the third known National footballer to die in a motor vehicle accident in the last four years after the late Steve 'Shorty' Malcolm, and Winston 'Twinny Bug' Anglin.
It is against this background that the THE STAR wishes to offer condolences and prayers to the family of the late Peter Cargill.
What Peter Cargill will be remembered for most is his role in helping Jamaica qualify for the 1998 World Cup in France. History will also say that he played in football's most prestigious event.
But, apart from that, Jamaicans will remember him as being integral in both Premier League football as well as the National programme in his post World Cup years. We will remember his work with Harbour View and Waterhouse as coach as well as involvement with our junior footballers.
Although praise and fond memories will not bring him back to life, we must ensure that his memory lives on in one form or another. It is known that we as Jamaicans sometimes forget our heroes be it sports or otherwise.
But, it would be good if Cargill along with Messrs Malcolm and Anglin are remembered for their contribution to local football. As, in that way we would ensure that their names would be forever remembered.
