THE EDITOR, MADAM:
To give the people the ultimatum on the issue of the Helsinki fishing village on the Portmore causeway to move might paralyze subsequent efforts. This might cause unrest and excessive tension, but a concession is a logical move.
The concomitant effort as it relates to sacrificing the transfer of the residents to facilitate the development of the road is a move in the right direction. Squatting is a societal evil which promulgated from the after-slavery illegal land acquisition drive of the ex-slaves. We can't condone wrong by embracing misguided and maladjusted persons in our society.
These residents have no water and are contaminating the place with excrement and other things which can certainly cause water and airborne diseases.
They might be poor and one might feel they are being victimized, but when epidemics like cholera and typhoid attack our children they can be fatal. Innocent individuals might find themselves battling for life as a consequence diminishing health.
We cannot allow people to do as they please in this country of ours, when others are acting so decent with their law abiding instinct. The enacted laws are to be respected and should not be compromised no matter what your political persuasion or orientation. We are a people of high standards and we expect them to be kept. Keep peace in your soul we still have a beautiful Jamaica.
