BLACK RIVER
A 19-YEAR-OLD Bulgarian Maragait Angelou, who overstayed his time in the country, appeared in the Black River RM court on Wednesday on a charge of possession of cocaine.
He pleaded guilty to the charge and was fined $20,000 or 30 days and he was also fined another $10,000 or 30 days for overstaying in the country. In addition, he was ordered deported after the sentence, if the fines are not paid.
Walked off
Allegations are that the police were patrolling in the Treasure Beach area of St. Elizabeth and on reaching Frenchman Beach, they spotted two men handing something to each other. Both men walked off when they saw the police.
Mr. Angelou was intercepted and found with two parcels containing crack/cocaine and a Bulgarian passport. It was noted that he entered the island on December 16, 2004 and was given one week's stay.
When asked by the RM what he had to say for himself, he told her nothing. He was asked by the RM how he managed financially and he told her that while he was staying at a hotel in Treasure Beach he had US$2,000 on him which was stolen. He told the court that he did not made a report to the police concerning his stolen money.
