Jamaicans shine on the track

FORMER UNIVERSITY OF Technology (UTech) athlete, Kerrian Stewart, was a winner at the recent New York Relays held at the Icahn Stadium, at Randall's Island in New York.

Representing St. John University, Stewart won the women's 200m in 24.41 seconds, beating Aisha Thomas of Long Island University (24.94) and Noelle Graham of Lemans TC (25.08).

In the men's 400m hurdles, Richard James finished second in 52.69. Douglas Bell of Delaware State University won the event in 52.20.

Meanwhile, at the Kansas Relays held at Kansas Memorial Stadium Marlene Smith, Ian Weakly and Orion Nicely were the best-placed Jamaicans at the meet.

Nicely was second in the college men's 100m in 10.45, this behind Michael Rodgers of Lindenwood (10.44) while Weakly's 50.08 placed him behind Bershawn Jackson of the US in the men's 400m hurdles. Jackson won in 48.67.

Smith was second in the women's 400m in 55.90 behind Nicely's McKendree College's team-mate Rosemary Okafar (55.75).

Dwight Thomas finished fourth in the 200m in 20.87 seconds. Leo Bookman, representing Nike, won the event in 20.52.

Kerry-Ann Robinson of Lincoln (14.46) was seventh in the 100m hurdles and eighth (12.18) in the 100m, Sheryl Morgan, who ran 1:01.65 in the heats of the 400m hurdles, failed to start in the final.

In the relays, Marlene Smith Lincoln to second in the 4x400m in 3:46.56 behind Kansas State University (3:45.37).

Former Holmwood Technical student Jermaine Myers, now at Cowley College, was 12th in the men's 800m in 1:56.44.

At the same meet, world 200m champion John Capel won the 100m in 10.10, ahead of Maurice Greene who finished third in 10.15. Lerone Clarke (10.30) was seventh in this event.
