THE PROBLEM OF thugs invading schools has again taken the spotlight.
In a story carried in this publication yesterday, there was mention of at least five cases where thugs invaded the compounds of schools and stole from teachers and students. A section of the story also hinted at the fact that students sometimes invite these thugs on the campus.
In light of Jamaica's crime situation, schools being invaded by criminals should not come as a surprise. However, it is cause for concern because our future leaders as well as our teachers are being threatened by men who have little or no interest in this country's future.
What is even more disheartening is that most of these attacks described in the story took place in the presence of students and only shows that the gunmen in the country have no regard for anyone.
But, from the look of things all is not lost. At least, it seems as if the police are attempting to arrest a potentially serious problem by placing police officers in schools although they serve multiple purposes.
Still, it is sad that the day has come when police are needed in schools because of both thugs and students who are bent on creating trouble.
However, due to the problems that exist within our society such a move, unfortunately, can be understood.
