Tragic tale

YESTERDAY'S LEAD STORY, 'The Last Supper', was a very tragic tale of how five persons loss their lives due to carelessness.

According to the lead story the boyfriend of one of the deceased, Natanya Irving, visited her home in Myserville, St Elizabeth, during the hurricane on Saturday evening and took her and her two children for a drive to Santa Cruz to buy food.

The article said he told her to get the children ready to take them on the journey. The family of four then left, despite the grandmother's protests.

What could possess a mother to leave in the middle of a hurricane for a eight mile drive with her five-month-old and four-year-old children. Many might wonder if she was not aware of the conditions that are normally associated with a hurricane. It does raise questions about her maternal instincts

This leads us to the 25-year-old mother also in yesterday's STAR, who tied her one-year-old son to a basket and left the house. She, however, was diagnosed with chronic social disorder and is said to be in need of treatment.

With the recent reports of children being abused, neglected and abandoned, one wonders what happened to protection of the young and helpless. If we intend to continue like this what will happen to the children?
