Don't drive and advertise

TODAY'S LEAD STORY speaks about the newest trend of advertising on the back of cars and buses.

The story also speaks about the issue of the ads being illegal under our country's law.

Certainly, this new development will surprise many persons, both the owners of the vehicles and advertisers, who have capitalised on this method of promoting their businesses and events.

It will certainly have a shock and awe effect on the rest of us who intended to use this method sometime in the future.

But, this new development does bring to the fore one of the ills of this country. And that ill is the lack of education about our laws. In the last five years, the police, the parish councils and various Government bodies have enforced the laws on our books which were previously unknown to the people affected.

What is needed sooner than later is a mass education campaign about the laws on our books. Such a campaign would indeed enlighten the population and also quash any future arguments about ignorance of particular laws when an offence is committed.

And it would go some way in justifying the maxim 'ignorance of the law is no excuse'.
