Roberts for Hall of Fame

NEW YORK, CMC

FORMER WEST INDIES fast bowler Andy Roberts will be inducted into the United States Cricket Hall of Fame at this year's Cricket Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony set for October 1.

Fast bowling battery

The 54-year old Roberts, who took 202 wickets in 47 Tests at an average 25.61 apiece, formed part of the West Indies' daunting fast bowling battery of the 1980s along with Michael Holding, Colin Croft and Joel Garner.

"This is a major accomplishment for Antigua and Barbuda. Roberts is the second Antiguan to be inducted into the Hall of Fame and this is an important milestone for our destination as we seek to develop our sports tourism product," Derede Samuel-Whitlock, Antigua and Barbuda's Director of Tourism in the US, said.

"We want to ensure that this event receives maximum exposure through the international cricket community."

Test debut

Roberts made his Test debut against England at Kensington Oval in Barbados in 1973 and played his first One Day International against Sri Lanka in the 1975 World Cup won by the West Indies.

Described as one of the fastest bowlers of his generation, Roberts rattled batsmen with his sheer pace and he needed less than two and a half years to take 100 wickets in Tests.

Roberts will share the honour with former Indian batsman Dilip Vengsarkar and Javed Miandad of Pakistan.
