WI batsman Morton in charge of Nevis again

charlestown, nevis, cmc

TRINIDAD-BASED WEST Indies batsman Runako Morton has been named captain of the Nevis side again, after the Nevis Island government intervened to solve a dispute over team selection.

Morton, a key member of the West Indies squad on the recent tour of Sri Lanka, was set to lead the team last Sunday but he, along with team manager Mervin Richardson and coach Raphael Wallace withdrew at the last minute.

Richardson and Wallace have also assumed their posts again.

Critical issues

The Nevis Island Cabinet met with members of the Nevis Cricket Association on Wednesday, hours before the team left for Antigua, in an effort to resolve some critical issues which had threatened the participation of the Nevis team in the Leeward Islands tournament. "These problems have impacted on all of us as Nevisians and we are indeed very close to our game, cricket.

All of us have an interest in seeing cricket played in Nevis and for Nevis to be represented in the Leeward Islands tournament," Minister of Sports, Laughton Brandy said in a statement.

"I am happy to report that the meeting resolved a team selected by-and-large by the selection committee and sanctioned by everyone present at the meeting, to represent Nevis in the match against Antigua this Thursday."

Brandy said that it was important for the public to note that after there seemed to be a deadlock in the NCA resolving the problems they faced, the Ministry of Sports took the initiative to invite the association to a meeting to resolve the matter.
