Man arrested for bribery

By ANALEE BERNARD, Star Writer

BLACK RIVER, ST. ELIZABETH:

A MAN WHO tried to offer a policeman money to drop charges was arrested and taken before the Santa Cruz Resident Magistrate's Court on Friday. He is Joseph Powell, 32, from Goshen District, St. Elizabeth.

The court heard that police were on patrol in the Santa Cruz area on Friday, when Special Constable Garfield Ellison charged Powell for having no road licence and no insurance coverage. While he was being charged for the offence he offered the police officer $2,000. He was then slapped with bribery charges.

When he was taken to court, he pleaded guilty to the charges, and told the RM that he did not know that he could be charged for offering the police money. He is to return to court on September 1 when he will be sentenced.
