POLICE ARE REPORTING that 35 persons were arrested in connection with the islandwide protests that took place yesterday.
The Police said the 35 persons were those arrested and charged so far as they have detained others in connection with the protests. They said the persons were charged with breaches of the National Solid Waste Management Act and disorderly conduct. But they could not say how many of the persons were charged for either crime.
A breakdown by parish of those charged showed that in Clarendon, 14 persons were charged with breaches of the National Solid Waste Management Act. Six persons were arrested and charged in St. Ann in connection with the protests. Among those arrested was Deputy Mayor for St. Ann's bay Sydney Stewart. He was charged with disorderly conduct.
Throwing debris
In St. Catherine, a total of 11 persons were arrested and charged. Eight of those persons were arrested in the St. Catherine South Police Division. Among the persons arrested were Spanish Town Mayor, Dr. Andrew Wheatley and Councillor for the Westchester Division Natalie Campbell-Rodrigues.
Dr. Wheately and Mrs. Campbell-Rodrigues were charged along with six other persons for breaches of the National Solid Waste Management Act and were granted $20,000 bail. All eight persons were charged after they were allegedly caught throwing debris on the roads in Portmore yesterday. In St. Catherine North, three persons were charged with breaches of the Solid Waste Management Act while four were arrested in St. Andrew North for the same offence.
In other crimes, two firearms were recovered in separate incidents in East Kingston. The Police said a .38 revolver and a 9 mm pistol were seized.
The police said the revolver was seized during a shoot-out on Mountain View Avenue while the 9mm were seized on Deanery Road.
THE STAR understands that an unidentified man was also shot and killed in the Mountain View area yesterday. The police report that at about 3:00 p.m. the man was walking in the area when he was attacked and shot. He died on the spot.
