TWO PEOPLE WHO were kidnapped by four men from a hotel car park in Negril, Westmoreland on Saturday, were rescued on Wednesday night during a police operation.
One of the alleged kidnappers was shot dead and a firearm seized in the rescue operation which occurred on Samoan Avenue in Negril.
According to police reports, at about 10 pm on Saturday Alfred Stephenson, 53, of Luthon, England and Desmond Douglas, 40, of Orange Bay, Hanover, were kidnapped. The kidnappers subsequently demanded a $10 million ransom for their release.
A high level investigative team, consisting of personnel from Organised Crime, Special Branch and Westmoreland Police Division started immediate investigations into the kidnapping incident. Following a number of covert operations, arrangements were made for the ransom to be paid.
About 4 pm on Wednesday a sting operation was set up and one of the alleged kidnappers turned up at Samoan Avenue to collect the reward.
Police personnel, who were at hand to witness the transaction, swooped down on him and he allegedly pointed a gun at members of the police party and was shot. The weapon, a 9 mm Smith and Wesson pistol with 15 rounds of ammunition, was taken from him.
The victims, who were unharmed in the incident were then taken to be debriefed by the police. In the meantime, the alleged kidnapper who was killed is of fair complexion, 172.72 cm ( 5ft 8 inches) tall and was clad in black shirt and a pair of brown shoes.
