JAMAICAN BOXERS KIERON Speid and Rudolph Hedge registered wins on a big professional card at the Crystal Palace Ballroom at Wyndham Hotel on Saturday night.
Speid, a former Pan Am Games medallist, defeated local heavyweight Jerry 'Big Daddy' Butler, and Hedge got past Richard Pitt in a featherweight contest on the card that had a local super-middleweight title fight between Jermaine Mackey and Marvin Smith as the main event.
"It's wonderful, they performed exceedingly great," Willie Yap, promoter and manager for the Jamaican boxers told CMC Sport.
"The Bahamians want them back and they were so surprised that our Jamaica fighters were so fit and sharp," Yap added. Hedge was impressive in a four-round points win over Pitt.
Clear points win
He floored the Bahamian in the third round and collected a clear points win from the judges in the four-round contest to improve his record to four wins against one loss. Pitt dropped to 8-4. Undefeated Speed, who won bronze at the 1999 Pan Am Games in Winnipeg, also won on points - over six rounds - to boost his record to 4-0.
Butler's record slipped to 3-2 with his loss In the main event, Bahamas super middleweight champion Mackey kept his title with a ninth-round stoppage of Smith in a rematch.
Undefeated Mackey jumped into an early lead in the contest and smothered the former champion with a barrage of punches, often set up by a precise jab.
The scheduled 12-round bout ended when Smith, with swollen eyes and bleeding from the nose, did not come out for the ninth.
As a result of the win, Mackey remains undefeated in six bouts while Smith noted that he will retire with a record of 8-7-1. Local lightweight Meacher Major handed the Jamaicans their only loss of the night when he defeated Glen Beckford in one of the support bouts. In the other bouts featuring local boxers, Elkin Butler returned to the ring after taking a year off, defeating Anthony Woods in a flyweight contest over four rounds, and in the middleweight division, Elkena Saunders defeated Ricardo Bethel over four rounds.
