PORTMORE SCHOOLS BRIDGEPORT, Waterford and Ascot High are off to good starts in the 2005 ISSA/Pepsi/JN Manning Cup Competition after three rounds of matches in their respective groups.
Up to the end of Thursday's round of matches, group E leaders Bridgeport, nine points, have logged three victories from as many games as they lead first timers Eltham High, also nine points, on goal difference. Eltham have copped 2-0, and 1-0 victories over two traditional schools Meadowbrook and Kingston College respectively and a 3-0 blanking of Holy Trinity.
Bridgeport are off to a hot start whipping Holy Trinity 7-0 in their first match, before carving out a hard fought 1-0 win over Meadowbrook and beating St. Jago 3-0, a game coach Anthony Patrick described as "an ugly win".
Unbeaten Waterford
"This is the worst game we have played all season," the Bridgeport High head coach, who carried the Portmore school to the Manning and Walker Cup Double in 2001, told THE PORTMORE STAR.
In Group D, unbeaten Waterford leads with seven points from three games, after thumping Kingston High 4-2 and tagging Edith Dalton James 2-0 before being held 1-1 by St George's College at home last Monday.
However, Tivoli, second on six points could take over the lead as they have St George's to play this afternoon at Emmett Park, while Kingston High, without a point battle Edith Dalton James, who are looking for their second win in the group at Baldwin Crescent.
Over in Group F, Ascot have been creating a stir copping seven points from their three games, including a hard fought 2-1 win over Spanish Town High at the Ferdie Neita Park last Thursday to take the lead in the group. Wolmer's could join Ascot at the top if they beat wounded Spanish Town this afternoon at the Heroes Circle school home field.
