RECENTLY, THE GOVERNMENT announced some tax breaks for civil servants in light of the price increases that have hit consumers in the past few months.
Additionally, before the announcement, the Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) disclosed that civil servants would benefit from a discount for 10 rides per week.
Although the tax break by the Government will benefit everybody, THE STAR is concerned that once again civil servants in rural Jamaica, who do not have the benefit of state owned transport to take them to and from work, will be neglected.
More often than not, whenever decisions are made about the future of workers in this country it is the ones who are based in Kingston who often benefit, leaving their rural counterparts out in the cold. In this instance, it seems the urban civil servants will have some reprieve in fares while their rural counterparts may never get an ease.
Dear Readers, THE STAR believes that it is time the Government and Trade Unions which signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) last year sit down and come up with a plan to ease the burdens that Government workers in rural Jamaica face as it relates to fares to go to and from work.
While it has been said that negotiations are taking place in relation to that issue, THE STAR believes the earlier it is resolved, the better it will be for everyone.
